I started Tong Long about 30 years ago, gee more than a life time ago! Back then I was a 2nd dan in Tae Kwon Do had my own school at Marcoola on the Sunshine Coast. I fought full contact in the Australian titles, and won a Queensland title, but after 10 years of that art, I felt there was something missing. I was searching for more knowledge. I became bored with the Tae Kwon Do. It is still a good art to start your martial art career with, and I learnt a lot from it.
My brother and I would go the new Asian restaurant for a meal in Mooloolaba. There I met Grand Master Henry Sue. When we first became friends I didn't tell him I did Tae Kwon Do. I knew he was a master of Kung Fu, and had never seen him move, but I could feel that he was very good. After a few months my brother told him I was a Tae Kwon Do 2nd dan. Then things started to change. We started talking martial arts. I decided that I want to learn from him. He only taught on a Saturday and Sunday morning because of his restaurant, so the school was small and the training severe - not too many people would give up their weekend to train.
My first lesson will stay with me for the rest of my life. I have never seen anything as fast, skillful and powerful as my Sifu's Tong Long. Then he touched me with his Kung Fu - a tap on the head. I was knocked out cold standing still. He then tapped me in the chest and I went flying back 6 feet and hit the wall. Then Gow Choied dropping hammer fist to my palm - only a tap, but it felt like I had been hit by a ten pound sledge hammer. I then realized I had found what I had been searching for. I had found my Sifu who I will be with and the art which I will practice for the rest of my life. I have been teaching in Caloundra at the school now for nearly 20 years. It has taken me that time to produce 7 skillful Masters. I am very proud of each of them. My Sifu has given me more than just the best Kung Fu art; he has made me a better person and I try to help and guide my students in life, because good Kung Fu is about the right way to live your life. The fighting part is a very small part of it as you reach a higher understanding of our art. I owe everything to my Sifu.
